Train up a child on the way they should go, and when they are old, they shall not depart from it.
Proverbs 22:6

Discipline

When a child is “getting into trouble”, having a difficult time following directions or treating others or equipment with respect, developmentally appropriate guidance techniques are used. These techniques are as follows:

  • “safe zone”. For babies especially, the desire to grab or reach or pull up is fearless and without any awareness of safety. Golden Harvest will keep babies in safe zones, where the possibilities of getting into trouble are minimized.
  • Positive reinforcement. The child will be encouraged when he or she is demonstrating acceptable behavior.
  • Redirection. The child is redirected to another activity and given an opportunity to try again at another time.
  • “when…then” statements. A statement in which the child is encouraged to accomplish something before going on to something else, e.g., “When you finish picking up the blocks, then you can go outside”.
  • “if… then” statements. A statement in which the child is encouraged to make a positive choice, e.g. “ if you pick up the blocks, then you can go to the reading center.
  • Take a break. The child is separated from the group for the brief period of time. This technique is used only when a child is exhibiting temper tantrum type behavior or is hurting self or others, or equipment. When the child feels back in control of him or herself, the child is encouraged to join the rest of the groups and try again.
  • Let me show you. The care provider demonstrates how to act and practices role play with the child. Especially used for manners, like saying “please” and “thank you” and knocking on doors before entering, etc.
  • Do it over. The child is instructed in the needed behavior or appropriate way and asked to do it over, e.g., “doll babies must be rocked gently; now you rock the baby.

Transportation

Parents are responsible for providing transportations for the child, both to and from Golden Harvest. Field trips, if any, shall be noticed in advance and individual parental permission slips shall be required for each activity away from Golden Harvest. Transportation for such activities shall be provided by Golden Harvest through staff or volunteers.

Meals and Snacks

Golden Harvest recognizes the importance of good nutrition in the healthy development of every child. Parents are encouraged to provide nutritious and adequate food for their children. (Please limit chips, gum to very rare occasions). Golden Harvest shall prepare and serve any breakfast, lunch, dinner and snack provided by the parent of a child. Additionally, Golden Harvest, shall have available breakfast foods and snacks to supplement food from the child’s home.

Clothes, Toys, etc...

  1. PERSONAL ITEMS. Children may bring clothes, toys, or other belongings to Golden Harvest facility. While the belongings are on the premises, they shall be subject to the same general rules applicable to all items., e.g. clean, safe, etc. Respect for individual possession shall be promoted and the personal belongings shall be sent home with the child on the same day. It may be important to provide your child with an extra set of clothes in case he or she gets dirty, or goes swimming or otherwise needs to change clothes.
  2. NECESSITIES. Parents or guardians must supply necessities for the child, such as diapers, baby wipes or wash cloth, lotion, sunscreen, individual comb or brush etc.

Illness and Injury

  1. First Aid and medication. Except for handling minor cuts, scrapes and similar “injuries” (first aid), Golden Harvest will not provide health care. Golden Harvest will not provide health care. Golden Harvest staff will give medication prescribed by a physician or obtained over-the-counter, as directed by a parent, in writing. All first aid and medication shall be stored properly and kept out of reach of the children.
  2. Emergencies. Parents are required to provide written permission upon enrollment of a child to allow Golden Harvest to seek and obtain necessary emergency health care. Parents or guardians are responsible for all costs connected with emergency care of their child.
  3. Non Emergencies. In non-emergency situations, where a child becomes sick or injured after arriving at Golden Harvest, the parent will be notified. The parent or guardian must give instructions or come in and assess the child or pick up the child, and, in the mean time, the child will be provided with appropriate accommodations, such as a quiet space or place to lie down.
  4. Non Admittance. Because a sick child takes more time and attention than a healthy child. which would lessen the staff time with other children, Golden Harvest will not allow children when sick.
